Yeah, It's a nice chip! I'ts been a bit of an inspiration for some of my other projects.
I suspect the solution would be to have another microcontroller read the midi and pass the calls to the Soundgin. This is easily within the range of an Arduino, and there are some tutorials on Arduino & Midi at the NYU ITP website via google.

I curious to know if any one knows someone who has done any strong midi platform development with the soundgin chip, the chip itself is very well specked and to me seem to be begging for some true midi love....love to here some feedback or at least a finger point in the right direction..DK

Drop me an email wil(at) straytechnologies (dot) com
And I'll let you know where the project stands. They've mostly been custom mods at this point, as I've found severe discrepancies from unit to unit of the SX temperature tolerance.

Any interest in having PCB's produced for the Gakken SX-150 to work with KIT_MIDI? Did this mod for a customer, and it's a strong little synth for the $!

Just some catch-up on the YM Mini Synth project.
I've created 10 of the version 2 boards, and will sell these fully-built to raise money for the kits, and finding more YM chips for when stock runs low. (If you know a source, let me know!)

The current version is running great from Protrekkr, PureData and EnergyXT wich leads me to feel the midi implementation is very stable.

I'll likely be releasing those boards for sale next week, and begin taking pre-orders by 3rd week in April for the final kit.

Hopefully I can premiere it at the open Mic at this coming 8Static!
