Hi,

I recently bought a bliptronome from ebay and I'm at a loss on how to actually use it.

I've arduinomeserial install and the drivers, just don't know how to get it to communicate with reason 5 or even albton, not sure if this is the right sort of thing to be asking here, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I follow all the instructions but i have some problems:
For 3-4 minutes it works but with some buttons that automaticly and randomly press themselves.

After 3-4 minutes it doesn't recieve signal from the computer and so it doesn't turn on the lights.

Anyone can help me to find the problem?
Thanks!

ok found out by myself.
in case someone needs to make this work, complete guide is here: http://www.s-seven.net/java_15_lion
worked fine. KIT_MIDI_2 must run in 32bit mode (check the option in the get info panel.
Also FTDI driver should be 32 bit I guess... didn't try the 64 bit version.
otherwise works fine!

Hello Mr. Lindsay,

I am a musician and producer, and I don't know anything about building controllers, but I use them all the time. My budget is very low, and your option of having a monome at a low cost is simply fantastic!

If I send you the bliptronic 5000, Would you please be able to help me building the Bliptronome?

Hey Jordan,
A good question that's confusing for beginners.
In short, the "Atmel Atmega" is a the chip that is at the heart of an Arduino. As such the Arduino "Operating System" is written in a different language for the Atmel chip.

I've found Atmel programming to be very difficult for beginners & students, unless they already have some experience with C or C++ programming. The concepts are the same, but the language is less forgiving, and the chip requires a different type of programmer than the normal "FTDI" Serial-to-USB method that the Arduino uses.

I'd say stay with Arduino until your project needs more speed or space. You can do an AMAZING amount with the Arduino system!

Hi! Thanks for the reply... haven't checked the forums in a while, had some really busy times, and still have, so, while your words make me want to hack a bit, I think I'll wait. Initially I had problems with MidiYOKE, but that works fine now.
I can perfectly understand that time is little for you as well, so no hurry.
Once you'll be ready for a release, I'll certainly get one.

hey,
be forwarned, i am totally new to this kind of thing. i was wondering how different an atmega microcontroller is from an arduino microcontroller. i ask this, because i am working with arduino's in a computing class. is the programming language the same? i assume most of the inputs/outputs work the same. basically, will using the atmega make things more complicated?

In short: yes... possible...
But not just a matter of programming. The buttons and LEDs are multiplexed through other ICs.. This method would have to be extended as well as supported in firmware.

An easier method? -- I often plug 2 bliptronomes in at once. One can be "pushed up" 8 rows or columns allowing the 2 units to appear as one big unit through arduinome Serial.

I have no programming knowledge, but was wondering if it is possible to do a larger arduinome using the boards as buttons and drivers, and the large arduino (more inputs) as the logic controller? I am really into 256s and I know there is some code out there for a arduinome 128, how easily could this be adapted for a 256?

Ther eis a great blog about making the A_SID kit midi ready here:
http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2009/12/lets-control-asid-via-arduino.html

from there, it would be a matter of creating a Bliptronome to Midi patch using PureData, Max-MSP, or even the Matrix plug-in in Renoise.

I've done similar things with the YM_MINI which creates a great interface for all of the filters and such on the chip.

Thanks for the nice words! I'm also living on a teacher's salary, which is why I created this project! I STILL can't afford one of the big-boys!

As far as sliders or replacement potentiometers, almost anything should work, as long as it fits your case. I recommend using either a 5K ohms or 10K ohms value potentiometer with a "linear" curve. Others will feel a bit touch or sluggish, but will still work. particular audio faders have a different curve and may feel touch at one end, but not the other. Those used to DJ mixers may already be used to that style.

Yeah, It's a nice chip! I'ts been a bit of an inspiration for some of my other projects.
I suspect the solution would be to have another microcontroller read the midi and pass the calls to the Soundgin. This is easily within the range of an Arduino, and there are some tutorials on Arduino & Midi at the NYU ITP website via google.

Hello there. I put my Blip together months ago and use it some much I never got around to tell you how grateful I am for making a 64-button controller accessible to the broke-g33ks of the world. Your work is amazing. I channel as many as I can to your stuff.

Now Mr. Lindsay, as soon as my mediocre educators salary permits, I'll be putting together another one... and I have plans to put 2 blips in side of one encasement, which can be all done in a tidy fashion no doubt with the help of some choice metals and wood and my trusty rotary tool. What I am interested in is the possibility of replacing the 4 potentiometers on the blip with faders. I don't usually built microcontrollers (sftwrguy) and I am wondering if you could point me in the direction of a sturdy fader that could basically just be swapped in for the rotarys. Will any fader for similar microcontrol builds work? What specs need I be aware of

p.s. Where can I post a video of my Blip in action w/my music setup

Midi boards & design are on the way. If you're in a rush and feeling hackerly:
It's a standard Midi signal in through the FTDI RX port, but you'll of course need an external power supply as well, as the YM-MINI is normally FTDI powered.

The MIDI signal will have to be isolated as-per the MIDI spec using something like the CNY-17 opto-isolator or another.

As the USB_FTDI can't handle the MIDI data rate, a change to the firmware has been made as of August 1st. If yours is older than that, a newly programmed Atmel will be needed (and available when the board is available.), or you can send the original chip for a re-burn (no additional charge).

As much as I'd like to release it now... nothing gets released untested!

I remember reading that you chose the FTDI interface so adding a midi board would be easy. Do you have any information regarding this. I would be willing to build me a midi interface of some kind, if I had some schematics or something to start from... having to use the usb of the computer is not always the most convenient solution...

Hi!
thanks for the reply. I checked the USB power and it was ok (powered hub, with it's own AC adapter). In the end I was able to solve the problem, apparently it was a coincidence that it all started to go wrong with the YM Synth... whatever it now works fine!

This may be a result of the usb hub not being powered. The YM_Mini needs draws it's power from the USB for all operations. Most USB hubs need to have an external power source (wall wart or adapter) in order to run external items that power via usb. ex: the YM_MINI or a big external harddrive.

Downloaded newest Arduino 18 again and reinstalled FTDI drivers for a third time. Success! Don't know why it would work before but now it does. No longer stumped.

Thanks,

Hello,

I just finished building my Bliptronome. When I plug it in I get the correct left to right scanning power up sequence. That is as far as I can get. ArduinomeSerial lists "No Devices Available". I am using the BUB FTDI. Not sure what to do next. I am using OSX 10.5.8 on an Intel Mac. Downloaded all drivers and software. Stumped...

Thanks,

ok now I have a real problem.
I found the following issue: on my system (Dell XPS m1330 running win7) with an EMU 0404-usb the YM synth makes the soundcard go bezerk (DSP latency checker shows a continuos line of red bars) and to cease working, on some occasions it even freezes the system for good. I've got the YM attached through an usb hum (them bloody laptops only have 2 usb ports). Do you know what could cause the problem?

Assembled the kit yesterday and have been playing around in the evening. So far I must say it's really a fun little thing to play with, simple yet with it's unique sound! I say it's worth every cent! Thanks a lot Wil! Brilliant work you have made with this kit! Makes me want to get all your other kits as well, as soon as I have some money (the bliptronome is the most tempting right now, though I already have a lauchpad).

Overall interaction with the device is easy once you've gone through the manual, of course adding a control surface would be great, but the platform seems open and hackable enough to enable me to do it myself (once I know how to do these kind of things :) )

Right now there is two things I have to ask:
- portamento: would be nice if one could have some sort of portamento added to it, would this be feasible? Could the Atmel handle that?
- vst control plugin: I am thinking of making a simple control plugin to make controlling the device a bit easier than manually entering CC data in the lanes. Something like those that have been made for the MSSIAH. I wonder if synthedit could be an option... but I've never used it, I only know the MSSIAH vsts have been made with synthedit...
Of course I still wonder if a plugin like that would really make sense... since the chip has only few parameters, there's no real need of storing presets.
